"Suburban Canal"

RV Host

North Port, Florida

A good, cheaper than campground ($15 / night or contribution) to park, get power and water and optionally socialize. Safe, clean and smoke-free. Mostly peaceful. The back yard is scenic along a canal with sounds of seasonal waterfall-spillway. There are newly arrived ducks I provide duck food for.

Frequent wildlife: Lizards, small bunnies, variety of birds. Occasional wildlife: Alligators, bobcats and a large variety of birds including Sandhill Cranes and hawks. The wildlife will not harm any person that is acting sensibly except fire ants will get you if you stand in the wrong spot.

About Alligators

Your RV / Rig Size

If there is heavy rain, there could be problems with traction. You must provide your own levels, I no longer loan levels.

Utilities & Fees

  • Power:  15 amp on the vacant lot side, 15 or 30 amp available on the narrow grassy side.

  • Water: Recommend using your own pre-filter in addition as well as additional 2+ stage filter for drinking it. Payment includes my reverse osmosis water to fill your drinking water jugs.

  • WiFi username 2.4Ghz, password 73737373, may be a bit weak.

  • Waste: Waste bins may be used. They are marked for mixed recycling, paper & cardboard and landfill. Dog waste to go in brown totes with black lids in back of yard.

  • I don't offer holding tank dump, bathroom/toilet, shower, laundry room, tools, to have mail sent here, extended stay, etc. except by invite or your emergency.

  • Good showers are available nearby at: North Port Aquatic Center & Port Charlotte Public Swimming Pool

  • Fees: $15 per night use of any utilities. (or) some guests have skills to contribute / barter and fees are waived.

Rules

  • As listed on Boondockers Welcome / Harvest Host

  • No dumping any food, black or grey water (you must have holding tank). Food waste in trash bin.

  • Dogs vaccinated and on worm and flea preventative and waste picked up. Place dog waste in the brown totes with black lid. Supervise pets and keep away from canal (gators ambush). Please do not feed my dog or wildlife.

  • No smoking unless in your rig with filter (reeks long distance)

  • No illegal activities/drugs, etc.

  • No vehicles with big oil/fluid leaks.

  • Loud music/TV OK if commercial free (I get annoyed hearing frequent ads).

  • Please don't use my address for mail. Try Amazon lockers (free), the UPS Store ($5-10) or USPS General Delivery (not reliable, but usually free).

Notes

  • I have a friendly, trained mini Aussie / American Shepherd born July, 2021. If you have dog with no aggression history, I invite them to play. A neighbor dog occasionally plays in the yard, usually early in morning and late afternoon. My dog may bark near your rig occasionally when playing.

  • Bright motion lights may come on at night due to wildlife, so it's advised to use window shades to sleep.

  • Feel free to roam the backyard/canal area and use outdoor furniture / seating areas.

  • If you would like help having something minor fixed, I can help. I do not do RV or campervan builds / not for hire.

  • Security cameras all around, but rarely monitored (usually if an incident to see).

  • Fire ant hazard - be careful where you stand. I poison every new mound I find, but new ones appear suddenly and frequently.

About the Host

I moved here in Feb., 2021 after living in a 20' Sprinter van (100 SF living space) I converted in public full time for six years cross country. I'm selling it after buying a Ford Transit van.  This property was neglected when I moved in, so I've spent two years cleaning it up and remodeling. It's been very challenging to hire good help. High school grads command $150 per hour without a license! I'm 53, single-never married, have a trained Aussie puppy, no family / solo, retired Army / VA pension-benefits, and have a political problem solving platform online at econeato.org. I enjoy talking about anything. I'm taking dancing lessons.

Free Eco Tours

Temporarily Not Available due to Low Water, but duck feeding is available.

in a NEW ALL ELECTRIC, QUIET Stability Boat

(or) you can launch your kayak (no dogs on kayak due to gators)

  • Normal dexterity required to enter and exit boat, but shoreline is shallow should you step in. Do not drop non buoyant items in the water because it's extremely hard or impossible to retrieve.

  • Slow speed, not a fast boat (largely because it's heavy and pontoon style)

  • Seats up to 3 people (one must be small if three total); max 450 lbs. (I weigh 210)

  • 10 feet long, highly stable small boat

  • Loaded with safety and emergency features

  • Comfortable premium swivel seat sits upright rather than slouching like in a kayak. You can swivel all the way around for conversation.

  • Canal is scenic and up to 6 miles long in various directions. There is a great variety such as various hippy-eclectic yards.

  • There are alligators, but you usually won't see any. They fear people and will not bother, especially in this boat vs. a kayak or canoe.

  • It's funny that my home backs up to the very best place to fish in the area (spillway), but I have a boat designed for fishing. I don't fish much and like to ride in the boat instead. You're welcome to fish though.

Techy

  • Twin hull propulsion electric motors are 90 lbs. of thrust powered by 100 AH batteries

  • Single rear electric motor is 3 HP and powered by two 100 AH batteries in series for 24V
